Liverpool close to securing Xherdan Shaqiri transfer

Jürgen Klopp is making his move to sign Shaqiri and wants to trigger his release clause, which is understood to be over £13 million, this month.

The Switzerland worldwide, now on holiday after appearing at the World Cup, has a release clause in the region of £13.5million and the Potters are resigned to losing one of their prized assets after relegation from the Premier League.

The diminutive winger enjoyed a mixed World Cup; one that was peppered with moments of footballing brilliance and political controversy as Switzerland reached the last sixteen of the tournament, eventually losing out to Sweden.

The forward has been a player on Liverpool's radar since 2014 as the club, then managed by Brendan Rodgers, tried to prise him away from Bayern Munich, who blocked the deal, according to the player. He admitted that he would like to leave following last season's relegation.

Now, Pearce writes that talks have been opened with Stoke as Liverpool look to capitalise on the Potters being relegated last season.

His side take on League Two outfit Bury on Saturday before a midweek game against Blackburn Rovers. Liverpool have been trying to reignite a deal despite a hands-off warning issued before the World Cup.

Calls for Liverpool to sign a goalkeeper were intensified after Loris Karius' mistake against Tranmere this week, but the club have made no progress with regards to a move for Alisson Becker, their preferred target.
