However, the 26-year-old has now completed the switch to the Citizens, signign a five-year contract. "They're redefining the English game and I wanted to be a part of it", Mahrez said on City's website.

City were left furious when Leicester set a price tag of £90m which saw City pull out of the deal at the start of the year.

City director of football Txiki Begiristain said Mahrez "beats defenders and creates space. We're sure he will bring additional attacking quality to our squad".

'Watching them from afar has been a pleasure. His moments of magic will live long in the memory as the Club and its fans continue to build a long-term legacy for the success delivered by the teams to which Riyad so memorably contributed.

Mahrez joined Leicester from Le Havre for £400,000 in 2014, and was named the PFA Players' Player of the Year during their surprise Premier League title triumph two seasons ago.

Mahrez becomes Pep Guardiola's first major signing of the summer with the manager having targeted a wide forward and defensive midfielder as his priorities in this transfer window.

Manchester City have also been linked with Napoli midfielder Jorginho, with the Italy worldwide reportedly left out of their pre-season training camp squad.
