Flames in street after Wisconsin gas mains explosion

Firefighters had arrived to investigate a gas leak in the Madison suburb of Sun Prairie when the explosion happened Tuesday evening.

Police Lt. Kevin Konopacki said that around 6:20 p.m., firefighters and police responded to a reported gas leak in downtown Sun Prairie, a community of about 30,000. A utility spokeswoman says a contractor had struck a natural gas line in the area.

Authorities evacuated buildings within a half-mile (0.8 kilometer) radius from the center of the explosion. They could see the smoke from one town over, and it was visible for hours.

Gov. Scott Walker honored Capt. Barr with a moment of silence while visiting Oshkosh before going to Sun Prairie Wednesday afternoon. "A volunteer firefighter, two kids, a spouse, and a lot of loss over in Sun Prairie".

Mahlon Mitchell, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin, on Wednesday identified Cory Barr as the firefighter who was killed.

"We didn't lose a firefighter yesterday", he said. But to lose someone in the clear line of duty, it's horrific. "When you lose somebody in your community, and somebody that was willing to run in and risk his own life to try and make sure everybody else was safe." said Brenda Wagner ahead of the procession.

Barr was 2002 Sun Prairie High School graduate.

But Mr Logan said there are no deaths "at this point".

Officials say at least five structures were damaged. Barr died after he was transported to a hospital, the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office said in a news release. I thought someone had hit the building with their vehicle. Cory Barr told The Star in November 2016 that it was his dream come true. It's 110 percent true.

Barr and his wife, Abby, bought the former Ski's Saloon in 2016 and renamed it Barr House, remodeling the tavern and continuing its friendly neighborhood hangout vibe.

In Sun Prairie, Gov.

Barr had been with the department at least 10 years, Sun Prairie Fire Chief Christopher Garrison said.

They joined countless others who paid their respects to this hero, grateful for his and other first responders 'service. "We give thanks to our courageous first responders for their service and sacrifice", Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) tweeted.
