Lovren hails Croatia's historic World Cup achievement

Croatia defender Dejan Lovren is eager to prove a point when he comes up against England forward Harry Kane in the World Cup semi-finals.

'I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense'.

Lovren and Kane are set to meet again in Moscow on Wednesday, less than nine months after the former was substituted in the first half as Liverpool were crushed by Tottenham at Wembley in the Premier League.

This victory over England led Croatia to their first World Cup final and Mario Mandzukic's extra-time victor sealed Croatia's third consecutive win in extra-time or penalties, having beaten Denmark and Russian Federation in penalty shootouts in the previous two rounds.

He said: "It feels incredible, especially after everything that was said about us before the game". People now will never forget us.

"I really don't understand these questions, always looking back to where I made some mistakes", he said. There is too much criticism about me.

And he is delighted that this current Croatian generation have finally lived up to, and now surpassed, the standards of the 1998 team which reached the semi-finals.

He added: "Today everyone in Croatia and around the world knows that we managed to make history. In extra-time we showed we are still able with the fatigue to play our game".

'We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday. This is what I wanted.

"He's proud of me and what I've achieved", he said.

"If somebody told me at the start of the season that I would be in two of the biggest finals in the world I would have signed straight away".

"I went through a lot of sh** and now I would say it is coming back".
