Trump visit to United Kingdom begins on awkward note

Trump visit to United Kingdom begins on awkward note

But as President Trump arrives in Britain on Thursday, he will find plenty of people who think it is more important to oppose him than it is to nurture U.S. -U.K. ties.

"My message to those coming to the protests in London is that this must be peaceful and good-spirited".

"There is definitely a sense that Britain needs America more because of Brexit", said Bronwen Maddox, head of the Institute for Government, a think tank.

Supporters of Donald Trump say a protest baby blimp set to fly over London is disrespectful to the President - but one thinks he will actually find it "funny".

He has clashed in the past with May - even though she is a fellow conservative who shares his view that defense spending should be hiked - and with her predecessor, David Cameron, who challenged Mr. Trump's anti-Muslim campaign stance as "divisive, stupid and wrong".

May will host a black-tie dinner for Trump at the stately home that will be attended by senior ministers and about 100 business leaders, including the likes of Blackstone group, Blackrock, Diageo, McLaren and Arup.

"However, let's not throw Trump Baby out with the bathwater - he'd be a welcome sight at any of the many protests happening across Scotland over the course of the visit".

Queen Elizabeth II has outlasted 13 USA presidents during her reign.

Prime Minister Theresa May will host Mr Trump and his wife Melania at a dinner at Blenheim Palace this evening.

Mr Trump, who is due to arrive in Scotland on Air Force One on Friday, is expected to spend the weekend at his luxury golf resort on the South Ayrshire coast. "They like me a lot in the United Kingdom".

Tall metal mesh barricades and concrete blocks have been erected around the perimeter of the US Ambassador's swanky central London residence, Winfield House, where Trump will spend Thursday night.

The US president gave a brief wave to the crowd before descending the steps holding the hand of the First Lady, who wore a fitted beige dress and red belt.

The largest protest is planned tomorrow afternoon, when over 50,000 protesters are expected to march from the BBC building in Portland Place to Trafalgar Square in the heart of London. "I don't know [if] that is what they voted for", he added.

Then on Monday, he will be off to Helsinki to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has come under fire for his approval of a blimp featuring US President Donald Trump dressed as a baby. As Trump argued the move towards Brexit is down to Britain having similar views on immigration to himself, he included Ireland in the talk, linking the country with United Kingdom member state Scotland. Trump and Putin, who have never met for an official summit, will hold three sessions before the USA president returns to Washington, D.C., early Tuesday.

Just hours before arriving in London, the USA president questioned progress in Brexit talks and Britain's new plan to remain close to the European Union on regulatory standards for goods.

In other news from this morning's press conference, Trump stunted expectations when he refused to comment on the UK's current Brexit turmoil.
