'Downton Abbey' Movie Premiere Date, Cast and Spoilers

It was always in the series' nature to end things on a jaw-dropping note - Anna (Froggatt) getting arrested at the end of season 5 is a standout - so fans getting their theory-making minds churning by greasing them up with the idea that perhaps the Downton Abbey movie will open on a dramatic reveal seems like an a-okay thing to do. Filming is expected to kick off later this summer, though no release date has been set yet. The movie will be written by series creator Julian Fellowes, and Brian Percival (About a Girl), who directed the series' pilot some eight years ago, has officially signed on to direct the feature film. "We're thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of "Downton" to the big screen".

"Since the series ended, fans of Downton have always been waiting for the Crawley family's next chapter", commented Focus chairman Peter Kujawski. "Delighted to announce we're getting the band back together!" she tweeted, while Michelle Dockery also shared her joy online, saying that she was "thrilled to announce that #DowntonAbbey is coming to the big screen".

It's been just a little over two years since the Downton Abbey series finale (and if you have already forgotten what happened, I am here to help), but there have been rumors of a potential movie since the show wrapped. We do not yet know much about the film's plot, other than that it will again center on the Crawley family and their impressive estate.

Downton ran for six seasons on ITV in the United Kingdom and on PBS in the United States.

It's official, the Downton Abbey movie is a go. Launched in November to huge visitor attendance, rapturous fan feedback and extraordinary critical acclaim, the Exhibition showcases the enduring global appeal of Downton via a stunning recreation of the house, the fashion and the history of the era.

Carnival Films is a division of NBCUniversal International Studios and one of the UK's leading drama producers. The series won three Golden Globe Awards, 15 Emmys and a special BAFTA.
