Netflix also showed its dominance over the traditional free-to-air and cable TV networks.

Last year, after "The Handmaid's Tale" helped Hulu break into the Emmy race in its biggest way yet, Craig Erwich, head of content at the streamer, revealed to Variety that their strategy of looking for shows that have "a big world, feel relevant and feel like television events" had paid off.

Netflix and FX scored nominations in the Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, respectively.

"The Assassination of Gianni Versace", one of the few serious contenders this year that can claim to be entirely new, picked up an impressive 18 nominations. She wasn't nominated for an Emmy in 2017, either.

A slew of first time Emmy contenders included Sandra Oh as the first Asian-American lead comedy actress nominee for her role in quirky spy series "Killing Eve", and Rachel Brosnahan's 1950s housewife turned comedian in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".

For lead actor drama, the Television Academy nominated Jason Bateman, "Ozark"; Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright, "Westworld"; Matthew Rhys, "The Americans"; and Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia of "This is Us".

The 70th annual Emmy Awards will be hosted by "Saturday Night Live" stars Colin Jost and Michael Che live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Monday, Sept. 17 (8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT) on NBC.
