Hour Ago Shock as Chelsea sack Conte

Chelsea have sacked manager Antonio Conte after two years in charge.

The former Italy manager had a year remaining on his current contract and had already taken charge of pre-season preparations at the club's Cobham training ground outside London.

The news has now been confirmed by Chelsea, who are widely expected to appoint Maurizio Sarri as their new head coach following his departure from Napoli.

Leaving Stamford Bridge was always the likely outcome for Conte following a season in which Chelsea missed out on Champions League qualification after a fifth-place league finish, 30 points behind champion Manchester City. After his appointment in the summer of 2016, the Italian enjoyed a hugely successful first season in England, instilling belief in a damaged Chelsea side and leading them to the Premier League title.

The London club says, "We wish Antonio every success in his future career".

The former Juventus boss was one of the managers on Madrid's shortlist after Zinedine Zidane's departure in May but he refused.

The Italian's main gripe for the past year was Chelsea's failure to land the signings he really wanted for its Premier League title defense. "Great man, Great manager".

"I loved working and learning from him".

Conte has been sacked after two years at Chelsea.

Sarri's got a buyout clause at Napoli rumoured to be in the region of €8 million while Conte will get a hefty severance package as well so the "switch" won't come cheap for the West Londoners.

In May, Napoli appointed Carlo Ancelotti to replace Sarri amid speculation that the latter could take the Chelsea job.

They reportedly include Brazil-born Italy worldwide midfielder Jorginho from Napoli, CSKA Moscow's Russian playmaker Aleksandr Golovin and Italian defender Daniele Rugani from Juventus, the side that edged Napoli in the Serie A title race.
