Images on social media showed a tremendous cloud of fire just near the airport.

For his part, head of the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation said in a statement that the explosion occurred far from the walls of the Cairo International Airport. According to Reuters, officials had suspended all flights from the airport while they investigate the cause of the blast, but Egyptian member of parliament Mustafa Bakri later wrote on Twitter that normal operations had resumed.

The minister of civil aviation, Younis al-Masri, said air traffic at the airport was unaffected by the explosion, which could be heard across the area.
