Margot Robbie And Saoirse Ronan Rule In Mary Queen Of Scots Trailer

The first trailer for "Mary Queen of Scots", starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I, has arrived. She was Queen of France at 16 and then widowed at 18, deciding to return home to Scotland without a husband, where she has to carefully compete with her sister - Queen Elizabeth I of England, ruling over Scotland and England at the time. There's also a historical war feel at play here, with England Scotland clashing on the battlefield in the fight for the crown.

Jack Lowden, David Tennant, Joe Alwyn, and Guy Pearce also star in the forthcoming period drama.

Mary Queen of Scots, which opens in prime awards season consideration in select theaters on December 7, is directed by Josie Rourke from a screenplay by Beau Willimon (House of Cards) and stars Dunkirk's Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, David Tennant and Guy Pearce.

'Queen Elizabeth, your cousin Mary has returned to take up her thrown in Scotland, ' Robbie is informed by her own aid while standing in an extravagant palace room.

Both now must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence.

After spending much of her adult life in incarceration, the desperate Mary manages one last throw of the dice as she conspires to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Mary keeps bringing up her claim to the English throne, and violence ensues. Such is the case with Mary Queen of Scots and the first trailer definitely feels like the kind of thing that could generate a lot of buzz later this year.

Beau Willimon, an Academy Award nominee for The Ides of March and Emmy Award nominee for House of Cards, has written the screenplay adaptation. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones - and change the course of history.

A friendship is embittered by the pursuit of power in the trailer of Mary Queen of Scots.
