Houston mom sentenced for trying to sell daughter for sex

Detectives watched Peters board a bus in Houston with her daughter to travel to Conroe, where she thought she was meeting a man who would pay for the child.

That man was actually an undercover officer, according to authorities, and he arranged to meet Peters in Conroe a short time later.

On Thursday, Texas Judge Phil Grant sentenced the woman to 40 years in prison on Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child, Attempted Human Trafficking, and Promotion of Prostitution of a Child charges, after Peters pleaded guilty to the crimes.

She was subsequently ordered to spend a total of 40 years in prison.

Peters has been in custody since her February arrest during an undercover investigation by Montgomery County constables. It was soon after that the mother was arrested, her young child in her company, unaware of what imminently waited for her....

The man she met online would pay her a fee of $1,200, according to a news release from Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon. He added that, without the efforts of law-enforcement officials, 'this child would have become a victim to the worst type of abuse'. 'Our citizens must realize that this type of activity happens in our community'.

Circumstances of this nature force the discussion of the safety of children in America.

Peters will be fist be eligible for parole in 20 years. Any would-be criminal should be warned: "this Department will remain relentless in hunting down those who victimize our children".

Child Protective Services took custody of the two-year-old, the Star-Telegram reports.
