Usain Bolt looks to start pro soccer career in Australia

"It would only be big if he can play and if he can go really, really well", he told the Seven Network.

Usain Bolt is on the verge of sealing a deal to trial with the A-League's Central Coast Mariners, the Australian club said Tuesday, as the sprint legend pursues his dream of playing professional football.

The eight-time Olympic champion Bolt has long harbored dreams of playing pro soccer.

The 100m and 200m world record holder, who retired from athletics past year, has previously spoken about his interest in becoming a professional footballer.

But there are serious doubts he could pass muster as a professional - even at the Mariners, who finished bottom of the A-League table last season.

Rallis is now in the United Kingdom and has been dealing directly with Bolt's representative Ricky Simms, who he says is fully supportive of the idea.

Rallis told AAP that Bolt's trial would only go ahead if FFA agreed to contribute funds towards his contract if he is successful. The A-League needed a hero, and we got superman.

"But fingers crossed things might play out, but the most important thing is we wait to find out and see how good a footballer he is first".

He has since taken part in trials with Borussia Dortmund and Norwegian side Stromsgodset.

"Because if he comes and he's not up to the level then it actually has a detrimental effect".

However, Rallis said that was not what he was after.

"Apart from him obviously being extremely fast the feedback we have received from Germany and Norway is that he is a very good learner and shows dramatic improvement after every training session", Mielekamp said.

Speaking at a business function back in May, O'Rourke announced that the league are planning to double their marketing fund and relaunch the "multi-million dollar super marquee fund" that was previously used to lure big-named draws like Alessandro Del Piero, David Villa and Emile Heskey to play down under.
