Walmart and Microsoft expand cloud deal as they compete against Amazon

Microsoft and Walmart, Amazon's biggest foes in cloud services and retail, announced a partnership to take on the everything store. Microsoft will be ensuring it all goes as smoothly as possible in a bid to extend the partnership well beyond the first five years.

"For example, to grow and enhance the online experience, the company will migrate a significant portion of and to Azure, including its cloud-powered check-out enabling Walmart to grow with rising customer demand and reach more global markets than ever before", the retailer said.

Walmart and Microsoft have struck a new partnership and they're very clear about why: to take on Amazon. "Whether it's combined with our agile cloud platform or leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to work smarter, we believe Microsoft will be a strong partner in driving our ability to innovate even further and faster". They will also collaborate on the assessment, development, and support phase of moving hundreds of existing applications to cloud native architectures. It also launched new apps for back-to-school shopping. This includes potential usage of modern workplace tools such as Workplace Analytics and OneDrive in order to increase productivity through better communication and collaboration.

"Walmart's commitment to technology is centered around creating incredibly convenient ways for customers to shop and empowering associates to do their best work", Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in the announcement. For Walmart, the company will be able to use Microsoft's AI tech to compete with Amazon on the future of retail. The five-year agreement pits leading e-commerce company Amazon against two of its closest competitors in retail and cloud computing.
