West Nile Virus found in London trap

Mosquitoes captured in Hartford's Keney Park have tested positive for West Nile virus, city officials said. WNV can be spread to people through mosquito bites, but it is not spread from person to person. There were 134 batches tested in the county.

Health officials have confirmed the first human infection of West Nile virus for the state of MI in 2018.

If you spend time outdoors, health officials urge you to use insect repellent, especially at duck and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Although less than one percent of people who get infected with the virus get seriously ill. In rare cases, people develop severe illnesses like meningitis, which can be deadly. "People who have had WNV before are considered immune", the KDHE says.

"This is an important reminder to stay vigilant and protect against mosquito bites throughout the summer and into the fall", said Dr. Eden Wells, MDHHS chief medical executive. Follow the directions on the package.

Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good fix.

Many mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn.

Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels.

Horses can also be infected with WNV. Talk with your veterinarian about vaccinating your horse to protect them against WNV.

There were more than 600 cases of neuroinvasive West Nile Virus and 30 deaths in Kansas from 1999-2017.

Those that do, usually experience mild flu-like symptoms like fever, headache, skin rash or muscle aches.
