Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer on administrative leave

Courtney Smith, ex-wife of former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith, spoke to Stadium sports network, outlining accusations that Zach Smith on various occasions threw her against a wall, picked her up by her neck, took a golf club to her auto and busted out her windshield after a recruiting dinner. It appeared to be all gravy for Meyer, but that fell apart in the span of less than 24 hours.

Bob Evans Restaurants removed ads featuring Urban Meyer from its website Thursday, hours after the Ohio State football coach was placed on paid leave amid an investigation into a former assistant coach's alleged domestic abuse.

A report by college football reporter Brett McMurphy earlier in the day contradicted Meyer's recent comments at Big Ten media day that he was unaware of allegations against Smith. An Ohio staple like Bob Evans not wanting to be associated with him in light of the recent revelations is an indicator that his bacon could be cooked. And again, we don't know how much Meyer knew, though it seems likely that his wife was aware of the incidents - Courtney showed McMurphy a text in which Shelley said Zach "scares" her. The second they put him on administrative leave, that telegraphed to me, and I think many others, that they were looking for a way out - whether it's settlement, outright fire for cause.

Meyer and Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith signed the amendment March 27.

Finebaum spoke more about Meyer and "arrogance". Ryan Day will serve as acting football coach during the investigation.

Zach Smith was accused of aggravated battery on his then-pregnant wife in 2009 while he was a graduate assistant on Meyer's staff at Florida.

Jay Paterno, who was the team's quarterbacks coach under his father, has been a staunch defender of Joe Paterno's actions. The charge was dropped because of insufficient evidence.

Zach Smith was charged in May with misdemeanour criminal trespass.

When Meyer was asked about the protection order filed against Smith, the coach said the firing decision had "a little bit" to do with that and that it was a "group effort" to come to that decision. A hearing has been scheduled for Friday.

Did Meyer know about the 2015 incidents?
