Fallout 76 won't launch on Steam

According to an FAQ page for Fallout 76, the next entry in its sci-fi RPG series, the game's beta and full release will be distributed via the Bethesda website, but not on Steam. The lack of Steam support has since been confirmed by Bethesda, which said "the PC version of Fallout 76, for both the B.E.T.A. and the launch, will be available only via Bethesda.net, not on Steam".

Fallout 76 will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 14th, 2018.

It was previously announced that expansion DLC for the game will be free, but there will be paid cosmetic items. "We hope you join us!"

Described as "more like an early access experience" than a standard beta, Bethesda sees throwing "the floodgates" open to "all possibilities" the best way to deal with potential bugs ahead of the game's launch. Fallout 76 looks to change that, though. If you pre-ordered through a retailer, you'll need to head to Bethesda.net, create an account, and redeem your code - this will either be on your pre-order receipt or email confirmation. Be sure you've read our FAQ, for details on how to redeem your beta code and other important details.

Bethesda.net has been around for a couple of years and received its first big push with Fallout Shelter, which eventually landed on Steam after a year or so of exclusivity. It's a little surprising given that Fallout 4 was released on Steam, but Bethesda is probably confident that their own launcher is mature enough.
