The Academy Adds Best Popular Film Oscar Category

The Academy Adds Best Popular Film Oscar Category

The Atlantic's David Sims dubbed the new bracket "The Black Panther Memorial Award for Movie That We're Afraid Won't Get a Best Picture Nomination", while Vulture's Mark Harris deemed it a "special fake Oscar" for the first superhero film with a primarily black cast.

To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined). Further details and eligibility requirements are yet to be announced, but the category is expected to cater to more blockbuster and genre films, often seen as maligned by awards ceremonies. Winning moments will be edited and later aired during the broadcast.

The Academy's board of governors has also set an earlier date for the 2020 Oscars ceremony and will shorten the telecast to three hours in an attempt to make the ceremony "more accessible for our viewers worldwide".

It's among three changes approved on Tuesday by the Academy's board of governors.

The Oscars are introducing a new awards category for outstanding achievement in popular film.

The date of the 92nd Oscars telecast will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23. The new category will be called the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film and was announced by Academy President John Bailey and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson in a letter (via THR).

The next Oscars air Sunday, February 24, 2019. The date change will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process.

Does that mean even less Academy recognition for similar films now that they may have a separate category? Many wrote that they hoped the category will be about stunt work. "Every single one was either nominated or won Best Picture with the exception of 'Snow White, ' which was given an honorary Oscar".

After the news broke, film aficionados immediately dove in to the discussion to give their guesses as to what this new "popular film" category will be. "Popular films are films!"
