Israel rejects European Union plan to link Gaza and West Bank

Armed Israeli drones and F-16 warplanes have pounded various areas across the besieged Gaza Strip, killing at least a Palestinian and injuring several others.

The gathering had raised hopes a deal for a lasting truce with Israel, with the backing of Egypt and the United Nations.

Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations' humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, in a news release called Israel's restriction of fuel imports "a unsafe practice, with grave consequences on the rights of people in Gaza".

Hamas warned Israel - with which it has fought three wars since 2008 - it would pay for the attack.

A truce between Hamas and Israel will be officially unveiled by the end of August, according to Turkey's official news agency Anadolu, quoting a Hamas source.

Israel struck targets in the Gaza Strip after dozens of rockets were launched Wednesday from the coastal territory ruled by the Islamic militant Hamas group, the Israeli military said.

Human rights groups have accused Israeli troops of using excessive force at the protests, but the military said they only opened fire in self-defence or on people trying to infiltrate its territory.

Palestinian reports said the two were killed when IDF artillery struck a graduation ceremony of al-Qassam members at a Hamas base Askelan, northern Gaza, where senior Hamas figures were in attendance.

"I am deeply alarmed by the recent escalation of violence between Gaza and Israel, and particularly by today's multiple rockets fired toward communities in southern Israel", said U.N. Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov in an overnight statement.

Israeli tanks fired shells at Palestinian resistance movement Hamas' posts in northern Gaza after shots were reportedly fired from the other sides of the border.

Israeli television broadcast images of damage to homes and cars in the town of Sderot.

The last four months have seen an upsurge in violence along the Gaza-Israel border.

Additionally, terrorists from the Gaza Strip ignited at least 11 fires throughout southern Israel that had to be extinguished by Israeli firefighters. One Israeli soldier was killed by a Gaza sniper during this period.

The plan includes "the establishment of an airport, a port and a railway to link the Gaza Strip with the West Bank", the media said.
