According to United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), it is described as the cornerstone of care for childhood development and the gold standard of infant feeding as it provides all the nutrients that a child needs for the first six months of life.

Breastfeeding has also been identified as a high-impact intervention to achieve the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health (2016-2030), which was launched alongside the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a roadmap for ending preventable deaths in a generation.

Enumerating on this to participants and health personnel at the world breastfeeding week symposium, with theme, "Breastfeeding: Foundation of life" organized by the Institute of Child Health (ICH), UNIBEN/UBTH, in collaboration with Department of worldwide and Global Studies, Mercer University, USA, Professor Eregie observed that it was a technical misnomer to refer to some entities as breast milk substitutes, as alternative food, for feeding babies.

World Health Organization recommends that all mothers, regardless of their HIV status, practise exclusive breastfeeding which means no other liquids or food are given in the first six months.

Globally about 40 per cent of babies are not on exclusive breastfeeding.


'We're making progress, but it's a hard journey.

Breastfeeding has both short-term and long-term nutritional benefits for children.

"For those who are, there are a number of factors that bedevil progress". Breastfeeding also protect the babies from adult on set of chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes mellitus. So then once they are aware it will be and informed choice; we know It's and individual choice so the mother has the right but at the same time we have to recognize the right of the children; that they also have the right to the best standards of health. It prevents hunger, malnutrition, and ensures food security for the child. Breastfeeding is a universal solution that levels the playing field, granting every child a fair start in life and lays the foundation for good health and the survival of women and children, ' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, JP Smith. He based his summation of the FOAD Hypothesis (Fatal origin of adult disease) which is premised on the fact that environmental factors particularly nutrition, act in early life to program risks for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in adult life.

According to PAHO, "Breastfeeding gives all human beings the opportunity to have a fair start in life". As such breast cancer does not pose any risk for the baby who is being fed. Only 2 out of 5 babies of 6-8 months begin with solid foods along with continued breastfeeding, and only 1 out of 10 children 6-24 months old receive minimum acceptable diet containing a variety from four food groups.
