Ruby Rose Calls Batwoman Casting ‘A Childhood Dream’

And Rose plans to use her new role to inspire and give children a hero they can look up to.

Ruby Rose had her big break with Stella from Orange is the New Black. In her Batwoman persona she patrols the streets of Gotham City, eager to fight crime and to confront her own demons.

Ruby Rose has made no secret of her same-sex orientation. News of Ruby Rose's Batwoman role follows hot on the heels of the casting of transgender actress Nicole Maines, to play transgender superheroine Nia Nal, a.k.a. Dreamer, in another DC Comics show, Supergirl.

"I was so nervous doing the red carpet that I basically skipped everybody, because I kept, like, spontaneously crying", the Aussie actress shared. "This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different". "I have always had this saying - I mean, not me, Oscar Wilde - which is be yourself because everyone else is taken". Kate Kane is the second Batwoman in DC Comics' history, with the first being Kathy Kane, Bruce's aunt and Kate's mother. Rose, who is also openly gay, said there wasn't anything like Batwoman on television she could identify with as a child.

Rose will debut as the character during the network's annual superhero crossover event in December.

Logline: Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence.
