Tommy Fleetwood's £120,000 Open winnings sent to wrong Tommy Fleetwood

A surprised Tommy Fleetwood saw the amusing side after finding out his Open Championship prize money was mistakenly paid into the bank account of someone who shares the same name.

However, the world number 11 was left waiting for the sum to be deposited to his account after the European Tour, which handles payments for the event, mistakenly sent it to a USA club pro golfer of the same name.

A Twitter user sent a screenshot of his friend's mobile bank statement Wednesday that showed a $154,480 deposit from the European Tour into his friend, Florida resident Tommy Fleetwood's account.

"My mother called me to say she's been getting lots of calls from the media".

The much older Fleetwood has also been a pro golfer - he's now attempting to get onto the senior tour.

Fleetwood's payout was reportedly deposited into the Wells Fargo bank account of a man with the same name, according to a screencap tweeted by golf school owner Greg Thorner, apparently a friend of the other Fleetwood.

It was the better-known Fleetwood's earnings for his tied 12th finish at the Open but, owing to a clerical error on the part of the European Tour, the wrong Tommy, who works at the Streamsong resort in Central Florida, got credited.

"I honestly didn't know anything about it", Fleetwood said.

"At least, he can always say he won $150,000 at the Open".

Fleetwood, who begins his PGA Championship bid at Bellerive on Thursday, said: "It looks pretty genuine". "The European Tour are looking into it and I'm sure they'll feel pretty bad about it".

"It was only for $14 or something but he called it up and looked at his statement, and that's when he shouted 'Holy smoke, I've just had £154,000 paid into my account!'"
