Are Liverpool Rocky Balboa or Ivan Drago?

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp at Ewood Park, Blackburn, Britain.

Expectations are now rising that Liverpool could win a first league crown since 1990 and although Klopp says that overtaking Pep Guardiola's side is the goal, he added that his team are still very much the underdogs.

With Liverpool having been heavily active in the transfer market - they have also brought in Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri - many are tipping them to enjoy a successful season.

"It's pretty normal that there would be one point where we spent a bit more money". I thought about it for the preseason, but now we have to be in this championship mood.

"More clinical in the right moments, more aggressive in the right moments".

Klopp used an analogy from the film 'Rocky IV, ' where heavyweight boxer Balboa takes down the favourite Drago, to describe Liverpool's task ahead in the upcoming campaign.

"The champions are Manchester City, they did not lose any players and brought in Riyad Mahrez, that does not make them weaker, we saw the Chelsea game and saw and they were impressive", he said.

"We are still Rocky Balboa, not Ivan Drago".

Brazil legend Pele has backed Liverpool to end their arduous wait to win the Premier League title this season.

"The league is exactly the same".

"We need more luck", he said. "I have not seen him [again] so far so we will see about his availability".

"We have to be more consistent".

The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are racing against time to prove their fitness for Liverpool's 2018/19 Premier League opener against West Ham United, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp revealed on Friday. We can improve our offensive play, we can improve our defensive play.

"There are not only the big six or whatever, if you see what happens around - you see how Wolverhampton acts, how Fulham acts, how Everton acts".

"In the moment someone thinks we reached already a point then that is when you start disappointing yourself and the people around you".
