QB play, defense help Browns to preseason win Taylor and Mayfield combine

The Cleveland Browns will open their preseason against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium Thursday night. On the first series of the fourth quarter, he hit fellow rookie Antonio Callaway on third and four for a 54-yard touchdown pass. His first touchdown pass was threaded between defenders to David Njoku in the endzone.

Barkley electrified the fans at MetLife Stadium, taking a handoff from Eli Manning on his first National Football League touch and turning on the jets on a 39-yard jaunt down the sideline in front of the Giants' bench.

Barkley managed only 4 yards on his next four carries before his night was over, but the message was clear: The Giants' dynamic skill group officially has another explosive playmaker to help revive Eli Manning and one of the NFL's more disappointing offenses in 2017. It started with him throwing a handsome back shoulder pass to Rashard Higgins.

Mayfield calmly stepped up in the pocket and delivered a low but catchable ball to WR C.J. Board over the middle for a fresh set of downs. The drive included conversions on third and long and fourth and two.

"If you're not going to work hard, then you're not doing it right", Mayfield said.

Drops were a consistent theme throughout the game regardless of who was at quarterback, with the Giants pass-catchers failing to take advantage when they did receive an on-target throw.

It marked the second touchdown of the game for Mayfield and pushed his line up to 212 passing yards and two passing touchdowns on 20 attempts.

Cleveland coach Hue Jackson said Mayfield's debut success didn't surprise him. In the meantime, former Buffalo Bills signal-caller Tyrod Taylor will start and serve as Mayfield's mentor. Perhaps he's exclusively intending to compliment his new starting quarterback and express confidence in him as he leads a franchise that has only won one game over the past two seasons.
