Nintendo Switch Online launches in the second half of September

There's only a few weeks left until Nintendo Switch Online launches, according to a press release from Nintendo.

We've been waiting for Nintendo to launch its online service for the Switch for a while now, along with any perks it has beyond simply being allowed to play online. While we're still in the dark to a specific release date, Nintendo has at least confirmed that the service is starting in the latter half of the month.

Nintendo will reveal how to tell if a game requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription "at a later date". An additional 10 launch games will be announced in the future.

As you might expect some people are rather annoyed that online play, which is free at present, is going to be locked behind a paywall.

We'll update as soon as more details about the service are released.

Once Nintendo Switch Online releases, you'll need a subscription to play your Switch games online. Every classic NES game will support voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app*.

Online play in compatible games, including Splatoon™ 2, ARMS™, Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis™ Aces, and more. The service costs $3.99 per month, $7.99 for three months, and $19.99 for a year.
