Sony developing Jackpot and Silk movies for its Spider-Man universe

Sony developing Jackpot and Silk movies for its Spider-Man universe

Sony is making plans for the approximately 900 Marvel character properties it owns, and in a recent article about that very subject, we learn that Sony actually has a name for its Marvel Franchise: the SUMC, or "Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters". In essence, they're building a Spider-Man cinematic universe without Spider-Man.

But the million dollar question still remains: will Sony's Marvel movies connect with the MCU? Or as grisly as you can be without straying into R-rated territory.

The company has also set up a screenwriter for a movie based on Kraven the Hunter in The Equalizer 2's Richard Wenk, and is developing another movie based on the character of Nightwatch, for which it is now seeking a writer as well. It's too soon to call, but Sony has determined that Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch have the potential to join Jared Leto's Morbius the Living Vampire as the next heroes to follow Venom. "Sony is open to having other characters from its Spider-Man films pop up in Marvel movies that are produced under the Disney aegis, and would presumably also like to see an Avenger or two cameo in its own movies".

"We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film", said Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures. However, Silver and Black, the previously reported Silver Sable and Black Cat movie, is not going forward. Before Jake Gyllenhaal had been tapped as Mysterio for Spider-Man: Far From Home, I had been rooting like insane for Kraven to be the next Spider-Man movie villain.

With the Silver & Black film getting scrapped it also means that writer and director Gina Prince-Blythewood could be leaving as well.

How do you feel about Sony's plans for SUMC? Prince-Blythewood will still be attached as producer to both films, but it doesn't appear like she'll be helming either.

According to a deep-dive into the current Sony situation from Variety, the company is working to prepare movies based on two more characters from its Marvel Comics library. The film was dropped from Sony's release schedule back in June.
