Chelsea give Sarri ideal Premier League start at Huddersfield

World Cup victor Kante's scruffy 34th-minute volley and Jorginho's audacious penalty on the stroke of half-time put Chelsea in control before Pedro wrapped up the points in the closing stages.

Chelsea's second came after Schindler had tripped Marcos Alonso, referee Chris Kavanagh being berated for the decision but he got the ball right.

"Will they make the top four and will that be a success?"

"A disappointing result, not a disappointing performance, especially the first half", Wagner said.

The Blues are under new management this season in the shape of former Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri, and Huddersfield will present his first Premier League opposition.

GK Kepa Arrizabalaga, 7 - Making his debut just three days after signing for a club-record fee, there were questions about his familiarity with Sarri's style of play and the defence in front of him, but the 23-year old looked assured in goal and a confidence-boosting clean sheet came easily enough.

What should fill Chelsea supporters with great confidence is the high cross Kepa took just after they had gone two goals up. Debutant Jorginho stepped up and coolly dispatched after a slow approach. He took responsibility for the penalty won by Alonso and the cool, clinical manner in which he scored suggests he may get further opportunities even when regular taker Hazard is on the pitch.

Despite dominating possession, Sarri's side looked uneasy early on and managed only two shots in the whole of the first half.

Once Kovacic is up to speed with Chelsea and their new system, the Croatian is expected to occupy that third role in midfield alongside Kante and Jorginho, as a fitting replacement for Marek Hamsik whom Sarri had at Napoli. Willian dashed down the left and stood up a cross that found its way to Kante at the back post.

"We were in trouble for 15 minutes against a physical team, we are not a physical team". You can't do that against Chelsea because they will hurt you, and that's exactly what they did.

Huddersfield fans will have felt the half-time score was harsh, but Chelsea set about extending their lead after the restart.

They started the match brightly and also debuted a new stopper, with Ben Hamer starting their first match ahead of Jonas Lossl following an impressive pre-season.

One striker who will not be scoring goals for Chelsea this season is Michy Batshuayi, who has joined Valencia on a season-long loan.
