Idris Elba reignites Bond rumours with cryptic tweet

British actor Idris Elba fuelled speculation on Sunday that he may be named the first black James Bond, with a cryptic tweet.

Idris Elba as James Bond is a rumour that's been around for years, nearly as long as that one about Quentin Tarantino directing a "Star Trek" movie.

Twitter reacted to his post with a host of memes, including a photoshopped President Trump holding up a picture of Elba and announcing him as the new Bond, and a proud looking Sean Connery punching the air.

Fans were obviously freaking out, as this is the biggest tease Elba might be stepping into the iconic role yet.

The original story came from United Kingdom tabloid The Daily Star, which claimed that director Antoine Fuqua spoke with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli about implementing a Black James Bond into the franchise.

Elba's name has now been linked to the Bond franchise for nearly a decade, during which time Daniel Craig has starred in three films in the series.

However, a spokesman for the alleged source of this quote, director Antoine Fuqua, told the Hollywood Reporter that he and Broccoli had never discussed Bond or casting. No one would even know.

But while some fans might have taken that as a hint that Elba, 45, would someday don Bond's tuxedo, he followed up hours later with a photo of Public Enemy and another tweet name-checking one of the group's most well-known songs. Is he just feeling some old school hip hop this morning?
