Boston slugger Betts homers to compete cycle against Jays

Although the team embodies the spirit and legacy of Johnson, they have Betts and other Black Red Sox for a more current source of hope and motivation.

Consider it a lesson well-learned for the rookie.

Borucki pitched eight shutout innings to beat the Mariners for his first major league win in his previous outing.

Betts is joined in the Red Sox lineup by fellow African-American Jackie Bradley Jr., a former star at the University of SC, who is arguably the most spectacular center fielder in baseball, as his catches regularly make the evening's highlights.

Betts is the first member of the Red Sox to hit for the cycle since Brock Holt on June 16, 2015 against the Braves. Betts went 4-for-4 with a walk. In the second inning, Betts picked up a crucial triple. And they're hot right now. He just keeps attacking.

The Blue Jays, however, got a two-run homer and three RBIs from Randal Grichuk, a solo shot from Teoscar Hernandez and five innings from former New Hampshire Fisher Cat Ryan Borucki to salvage the series finale.

Before Thursday's game, the Blue Jays welcomed 24-year-old pitching prospect Thomas Pannone to the 25-man roster, up from Triple-A Buffalo.

Boston battled back in the fifth to tie the game.

"Yeah, that's possible but it doesn't matter if you don't pitch well", Showalter said. Grichuk then hit a two-run home run to cap a three-run inning and gave the Blue Jays a 7-4 lead.

And he has never looked back. Martinez, held to one hit Thursday, is hitting.331.

Eovaldi is 2-0 since coming to Boston and has yet to allow a run in 15 innings through two starts. They'd be like, 'Pearce, you starting today?' I'd be like, 'Nope.

"Maybe just what we need". You'd also have to figure that the Red Sox being the best team in baseball would work in his favor (team record shouldn't be a big factor, but we know it is). The five-time All-Star, 2012 AL Cy Young Award victor and two-time AL earned run average leader has a career record of 138-74. He was gone after four-plus innings.

Hernandez homered in the third to put the Blue Jays up 4-2. Undaunted by the switch, Jones had three hits and two RBIs.

In the fifth, Boston's Martinez hit a solo homer to cut Toronto's lead to 4-3.
