Halep turns back Barty to reach Montreal final

Halep turns back Barty to reach Montreal final

The world No 1 was in control from the outset against a nervous-looking Australia's Ashleigh Barty, whose challenge was undone by a string of unforced errors.

The 26-year-old Romanian star also won the hard-court event that rotates between Toronto and Montreal in 2016 in Montreal.

Top-ranked Simona Halep outlasted third-ranked Sloane Stephens 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-4 on Sunday to win her second Rogers Cup title.

"You make me play better and better every time we play", Halep said of Stephens.

Halep won her third title of the year and 18th overall.

"I feel like today (Friday) I should have played second match in the night, and also tomorrow (Saturday) at 6 (p.m.), not at 1".

She eventually managed to break the American in the seventh, but Stephens replied with her own and ultimately closed out the match 6-3 6-3.

The timing of the match, in the afternoon, had upset Halep after her Friday evening quarter-final win.

"It's an awesome feeling to be able to talk again at this ceremony as a victor", Halep said. "I hope in the future it's going to be better".

Halep fended off four set points to claim a back-and-forth first set in a tiebreak after storming to a 4-1 lead before U.S. Open champion Stephens fought back to level.

After a shaky start, Halep won three straight games to take the first set and dominated the second set behind pinpoint serving and stout defence.

Many players now would start to correct their mistakes made at the first set, but Garcia's game had started to unravel fast and at 1-all she had netted more shots, missed returns and hit strokes longer than need be.

"I love to play in Canada", she said. Sharapova had a lot of spunk and great rallies for her French opponent and she combined some good tactics, to lead in the first set 2-all but the Frenchwoman played a patient game and soon leveled the score to 3-all.
