David de Gea 'to be offered lucrative new Manchester United deal'

Manchester United are confident David De Gea will sign a new five-year deal at Old Trafford.

Sport is reporting that the Red Devils are hopeful of getting the Spain global to commit to a new long-term contract as they look to secure the future of the talented goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old's present deal expires in 2019, although United have an option to extend it by a further season.

However, United fans breathed a huge sigh of relief when Madrid splashed out £32m on the signing of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea last week as it's now highly unlikely the European champions will come calling for De Gea again any time soon.

Following a shaky start to his United career after joining from Atletico Madrid seven years ago, De Gea has since established himself as one of the best keepers in the world.

He has won United's player of the year award in four of the last five seasons emphasising his importance to the team.

The Red Devils were 2-1 winners over Leicester City in their Premier League opener at the King Power Stadium on Friday night.

And United's desire to keep hold of their star man comes as no surprise, even though Spain global De Gea endured an unusually-difficult World Cup in which he made a rare error in a draw with Portugal.

Despite a miserable 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign with Spain in Russian Federation, he is still regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in world football, and United are hopeful this new deal will fend off any others teams trying to bid for their No. 1.
