US Open results: Serena Williams advances, Sloane Stephens upset by Anastasija Sevastova

Stephens had beaten Sevastova in last year's quarters, digging out a three-set victory after being down 3-1 in the third.

"I weigh 238 pounds, so I have always said it's pretty hard to play in hot conditions", said Isner, who had 11 shirt changes during match. "I'm just going to try to play the rest of the season as hard as I can and hopefully have some more good results".

Nadal has won 11 of 16 past matchups against del Potro, including the past three, each at a Grand Slam tournament: in the semifinals of last year's U.S. Open, the semifinals of the French Open in June and a five-set thriller in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July.

"I did not have many goals", said the Latvian. You know, in the other case, Rafa had a tougher draw to go through the semis, but, you know, he's got two days now to recover, so he's gonna be fresh. Williams punched her ticket to the semifinal with a win over No. 8 seed Karolína Pliskova at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday.

"I'm trying!" she responded to a plea from the crowd to pick it up in the second set. After suffering a first set "bagel", Nadal had to battle back from breaks in the third and fourth sets before seeing off the first top 20 player he had faced at the US Open since 2013. It was hot for both of us.

"I know she has a big game, but I have a big game too", said Pliskova.

After her maiden Grand Slam triumph Stephens didn't win another match in 2017. Williams had won the previous four majors and her fifth in a row would have seen her equal Graf's historic accomplishment. "In particular I made good returns every service game".

"I think I played very solid this game", said Del Potro.

Williams took down her Czech opponent in two sets, winning 6-4, 6-3 in their quarterfinal meeting Tuesday - Williams' first win against a Top-10 ranked opponent in 2018.

Sevastova, who retired from tennis in 2013 due to injuries before returning in 2015, almost let Stephens into the match in the second set as the American twice pulled back on serve at 2-1 and again at 4-3, but the fightback proved short-lived.

The American was not landing enough first serves to keep himself out of trouble, with Del Potro increasingly forcing him to play off his toes, and by the fourth set Isner's resistance had run out.

"Obviously defending a title is very hard".

It was the middle of the night before the Spaniard could head home after beating Thiem: 'It was a great match, great atmosphere and I was happy to be part of it. "Even when I did have my break opportunities, I just wasn't playing the points well at all".

Wimbledon will be the most adamant of the four in resisting moves to extend legal coaching during matches, but there is likely to be more agreement on ditching the idea of reducing the number of seeds from 32 to 16.
