'Barca can bid for De Jong, but Ajax won't sell!'

They will also benefit from the rising interest in De Jong because it will drive up his value.

De Jong has told the Ajax management that he wanted to stay at the club this season.

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has said Barcelona's bid for Frenkie de Jong failed this summer because it was nowhere near what the midfielder is worth in today's market.

According to OK Diario, European champions Madrid are now firmly in the race for De Jong, who made 26 appearances for Ajax during the 2017-18 campaign.

Barcelona's pursuit of Frenkie de Jong hasn't stopped even though the transfer window is now shut.

"Barcelona may return for Frenkie in January but it's unlikely that players will leave in that period".

The Catalan club were heavily interested in securing the services of the 21-year-old over the summer, having seen Atletico Madrid superstar Antoine Griezmann snub a move to Camp Nou. Therefore, Barcelona could sign him in January and use him in the Champions League.

However, Overmars is adamant de Jong will not be leaving the club, even if Barca were to make an improvement on Tottenham's offer.

If De Jong leaves Ajax to join Barcelona in the winter transfer window, it will be really bad for the Dutch side as they will not get much time to rope in a replacement.

De Jong began his career with Willem II Tilburg in 2015, making his debut against FC Den Haag in May of that year.

De Jong, who made his senior worldwide debut for Holland earlier this month, played the full 90 minutes as they lost to France in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday evening.

He added: "He is doing very well now, but we have often had Dutch players who first played very well, but later became less".
