Apple unveils the iPhone XR, a $749 budget smartphone

In addition, iPhone also unveiled a more affordable iPhone Xr, which effectively replaces last year's iPhone 8, and comes in a range of new colors.

Perhaps its most important upgrade is its processor, a new dual-core 64-bit chip that promises to be twice the performance over its predecessor.

Apple previewed AirPower past year, showing a flat pad the company said could wirelessly charge devices such as an Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods case all at once. Both versions feature secure facial recognition technology that only displays notifications to the phone's owner and run with speeds nine times faster than previous models due to a new A12 Bionic chip, capable of machine learning and processing five trillion operations per second.

The home button is gone, but the screen acts much like the X's, with Face ID and swiping to go home.

But man-this looks a lot like an iPhone X display.

Apple surprised with a third smartphone, the "lower-end" iPhone XR ($749).

The US Food and Drug Administration said it worked with Apple to develop apps for the Apple Watch. While we still don't know what the R stands for (Regular, Rookie, Rad?), it's obvious this is the iPhone for Apple fans with a smaller budget, with a design that isn't quite as flashy, a single 12-megapixel camera and a 6.1in LCD display. Even a new version of the Apple Watch, called Series 4, has a 30 percent larger screen, making it fit even more information.

The new Apple Watch will start at $399 and be available on September 21.

"Apple watch has become an intelligent guardian for your health", he boasted.

As many as 6.1 million Americans have atrial fibrillation, a heart disease involving irregular heart rhythm for which the Watch could offer an early warning. The company says it's the first EKG available over the counter.

Its "next-generation gyroscope" means the Watch 4 is capable of detecting when the user has a fall, based on the arm motions of its user as they tumble, and is also fitted with software that lets users take an electrocardiogram, the first over-the-counter device to do so.

The fall detection upgrade is expected to appeal to worker safety concerns in factories or other industrial settings, as well as to elderly or disabled users.

Moorhead said the health features for the new devices were notable.

"I can see kids buying one for their parents and grandparents", he said of the smartwatch.

"Apple, once again, has shown their mastery of pricing tiers, which will extract more revenue per customer", analyst Gene Munster of Loup Ventures wrote in a note.

Actually, this is Apple's priciest iPhone yet. "Or something else entirely?"

Both Bloomberg and Kuo also expect Apple to announce new AirPods this year with support for "Hey Siri" voice commands, along with a wireless charging case for both new and existing AirPods. Apple's dual SIM solution, in the U.S., would enable someone to use AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile (but not Sprint) as their primary carrier while using any carrier that offers a SIM card as the secondary carrier.
