Gareth Southgate gives warning over 'game time'

"The people that (are) speaking about his minutes, I think they are a bit confused", he concluded at the end of the question.

"I don't think there is trust from the manager to the player that he can do it on a regular basis".

Like with so many others in the England squad, though, that confidence can only be maintained if Rashford plays for his club, no matter what he has achieved so far and the impressive comparisons he has drawn.

Rashford scored two goals in two games during the worldwide break, opening the scoring in a 2-1 defeat to Spain and scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Switzerland.

Rashford claimed nine goals in 21 appearances in that first half-season but he has since endured fallow periods.

Lukaku, who has 43 goals in 77 games for his country, scored three times in Belgium's recent worldwide victories over Scotland and Iceland.

Carragher suggested after England's 1-0 win over Switzerland on Tuesday that Rashford may have to leave Old Trafford to play more regularly and fulfil his potential and Mourinho, clearly, was not impressed. They have to try to win matches.

"He's got huge competition for places at his club so you can understand that", Southgate said. "We are hoping that now we have given them some minutes they will go back to their club better prepared for when they get their opportunity and it gives them a better chance of staying in the team".

"Speaking about Marcus, I think I can expect that Sunday I'm going to be highly criticised for not playing him tomorrow, because some of the boys are really obsessed with me and some of them have a problem with some compulsive lies", said Mourinho.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is reportedly wanted by Premier League top clubs Everton and Chelsea.

"Some of the step-overs and things Cristiano Ronaldo was doing at that age [were remarkable], but Ronaldo wasn't converting them into the same number of goals. He's got huge competition for places at his club, so you can understand (his frustration)".

"His confidence will be boosted with two goals against top-quality opposition". They are going to have the League Cup and European football, so there's more opportunity that the squads will get rotated.

Southgate also insists the 20-year-old is further down the line in development terms than fellow striker Kane, who was farmed out on loan four times by Tottenham as a youngster before making the breakthrough at age 21.
