How Arsenal could line up against Newcastle United

Arsenal boss Unai Emery insists he works well with Mesut Ozil and says the German's retirement from worldwide football will benefit the Gunners.

Emery has denied a rift with the midfielder, who stepped away from global duty following Germany's poor World Cup defence, citing "racism and disrespect" over his Turkish roots.

The Gunners held off a stubborn Cardiff City side in their last outing to claim a 3-2 victory, having previously suffered defeat by the same scoreline to Chelsea in their first away game under Unai Emery.

Emery, though, is ready to treat Saturday's trip to Newcastle United, Arsenal's first game after the global break, as a clean slate for his players, including Ozil.

With Ozil having retired from worldwide football, Emery has had a prolonged opportunity to work with his highest-profile and best-paid player over this past fortnight and is adamant that they do have a strong relationship.

As per Goal, he told reporters: "He really needs at least this season to progress, see where we go to".

Here for me it isn't for a lot of the time speaking about what people are telling us.

Ozil has looked slightly out of place when Emery has deployed him on the right wing rather his normal central role as a No. 10, but Emery reiterated that the German is happy switching between the two. Also, I think he is working for the team to help us with his quality.

"I just have a feeling it might work this time". I usually give players the position they feel the best. He can improve, he can do more. "Here he has played both".
