Video footage of the terrifying moment showed the rock from the limestone cliff face split and plummet to the shore, sending waves crashing over tourists.

Seven people were injured, with one woman suffering back injuries.

A government statement said a 34-year-old Czech woman had been hospitalised with a fractured vertebra, while her husband and two children sustained light injuries. The rest only had minor injuries. O'Connell estimates there are around 400 to 500 people in the area when the rockfall occurred and around a dozen tourist boats were out in the bay.

"There was a noise and a small piece of rock fell, then a second bigger and finally a third big piece of rock that during the fall created a sea whirlpool that overturned the boats", one eyewitness said. He believed more were coming, so he started running. Meanwhile, some boats were capsizing in the strong waves. The fire department said it had sent 18 rescuers accompanied by a sniffer dog, while a further nine-person crew was heading to the site by helicopter.

An air and sea search was conducted as a precaution in case there was anyone trapped under the rocks.
