Forecasters and politicians pleaded with the public to take the warnings seriously and minced no words in describing the threat.

"This storm is a monster", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said.

The agency said, "Interests elsewhere in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states should monitor the progress of Florence".

A hurricane watch is now in effect for Edisto Beach South Carolina to the North Carolina-Virginia border as well as Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, including the Neuse and Pamlico rivers, the NHC said. But getting out of harm's way could prove hard.

Governors in SC and Virginia have also issued mandatory evacuation orders ahead of the storm. "This evacuation is for the safety of thousands of Virginians living in that zone".

Two other storms are spinning in the Atlantic.

The evacuation is said to affect one out of every five South Carolinians, representing around a million residents.

Florence, the most intense of the three has reached Category 4 status and will likely continue to strengthen as it moves over the warm waters heading for landfall on the East Coast later this week.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center forecasts as much as 20 inches of rain, if not more, for parts of North Carolina. So does the prospect of replacing North Carolina with another team on the schedule.

The Atlantic Coast Conference also announced that Wake Forest's game against BC in Winston-Salem will now start at 5:30 p.m.to get done earlier with Florence approaching the Carolinas' coastline Thursday and Friday.

Rain measured in feet is "looking likely", he said.

"Right now, it's time to get out of harm's way", said Tom Collins, emergency management director for Pender County.

The storm forced people to cut their vacations short along the coast.

"This is probably the only exercise I get this week", she quipped.

Several of the schools appeared to be publicly in agreement on the need for schedule changes due to Florence, though East Carolina's decision not to travel to Blacksburg nixed Saturday's game.

"The water could overtake some of these barrier islands and keep on going".

"It was so lovely". "I guess that's a big part of the problem".

A strengthening Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall on Thursday, bringing with it potentially catastrophic storm surges, winds and flooding.

Florence's projected path includes half a dozen nuclear power plants, pits holding coal-ash and other industrial waste, and numerous hog farms that store animal waste in huge lagoons. "It's more like a (Hurricane) Harvey situation, where it'll just slowly wind down".

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper on September 10 urged North Carolina residents, businesses and visitors not to delay preparations and to follow evacuation orders. Typically local governments in North Carolina make the call on evacuations. "We go through a lot of these hurricane scares throughout the years", Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said.
