Amir Khan recovers to beat Samuel Vargas on points

Brook was ringside at Arena Birmingham on Saturday as Khan floored Vargas in the second but then had to beat the count himself after being caught flush with a right hand.

The former world champion got the win he was hoping for but in true Khan style, the fight had a little bit of everything. Thrilling, exciting, but always vulnerable.

Amir Khan is targeting a showdown with Manny Pacquiao next, and not a bout with his domestic rival Kell Brook. "I want Manny Pacquiao, Manny Pacquiao is my No. 1 pick".

Khan needed to climb off the canvas to beat Vargas, who a couple of times managed to crash through his defence and land heavy shots.

Brook and Khan have a long and bitter history, with both having previously claimed that they are the biggest name when it comes to the welterweight division - both domestically and internationally. And late on, Khan sensibly moved away from trouble, boxing close to the ropes and thrusting himself into sporadic attacks, notably finding his target when a right hand sent Vargas back to the ropes in the ninth.

The bout was King Khan's second of the year after he returned from a two-year hiatus to beat Phil Lo Greco on April 21. Vargas was knocked down again in round three after a punch on top of the head.

But Vargas, who was stopped by Garcia in seven rounds two years ago and in four rounds by Spence in 2015, stubbornly fought back and breached Khan's defense early in the seventh round. I want Manny Pacquiao first. Khan looked very fast and strong early. Khan staggered backward but was saved by the bell once again. "You, I think, Pacquiao stops him", Vargas said.

Talking about his future plans, he said: "The only fight that works for me over Kell Brook is Manny Pacquiao".

But the elephant in the room, Khan's fragile chin, let him down right at the end of round two as a long-range right hook left him on his backside.

A clash with his old adversary Brook has also been touted, however, Khan has suggested that a clash with the Filipino superstar would be preferable.
