In rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease with symptoms such as muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and coma. While there is no specific treatment for West Nile virus, patients are treated with supportive therapy as needed. "As long as mosquitoes continue to be active, we need to take precautions to protect ourselves from the virus".

No cases were recorded in 2015 and 2016, but in 2017 the country reported five fatalities.

Dress in long-sleeved shirts, trousers and socks when you're outside. The three horses are unrelated and from different parts of the county and represent a recent spike in confirmed cases in Wyoming.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent biweekly West Nile virus report, Nebraska was second only to North Dakota in overall human West Nile virus cases and first in the number of severe, neuroinvasive cases. "There may be many more residents who acquired West Nile virus, but we never learned about them because they didn't seek medical attention or they sought attention but lab tests weren't ordered".

Locally, the health unit's surveillance program has shown that West Nile virus activity remains within local and historical norms.
