Hurricane Helene to gradually weaken to tropical storm: NHC

Hurricane Helene to gradually weaken to tropical storm: NHC

The country's No. 2 power company said Wednesday that it's anticipating 1 million to 3 million homes and businesses could lose power for lengthy periods, depending on the storm's track. The slow forward motion means Florence will batter the area with heavy rainfall, producing up to 40 inches in coastal North Carolina and northeastern SC.

But the NHC warned that Florence still poses a deadly threat to a wide stretch of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, from southern Georgia into southern Virginia, and remained capable of unleashing rain-fuelled catastrophic flooding of rivers and low-lying areas.

Florence is forecast to dump up to 40 inches of rain in some areas after it makes landfall in North and SC.

About 800 flights in the region have been canceled ahead of the storm, CNN reported.

More than 1 million have been ordered to evacuate the coastlines of the Carolinas and Virginia.

At 5 p.m., Isaac was located about 560 miles east of Barbados, packing maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour and storm force winds extending 105 miles from the centre. Fountain said most storms are an inconvenience, "but Hurricane Florence will be a life-changing event for many people here in the Carolinas".

States up and down the East Coast have a great potential for severe weather.

Hours later, Mr Trump approved emergency declarations for both coastal states, a move allowing the release of federal funds and equipment to help protection and recovery efforts.

More than 10 million people are in the crosshairs of Hurricane Florence as storm force winds move within hours of battering the USA east coast.

According to the NHC forecast at 5 p.m. on September 12, the storm is forecast to slow down near the coast of North and SC before it passes over the states and into Georgia.

It is unusual to have such a strong hurricane so far north.

There have been warnings that any flooding of hog manure pits, coal ash dumps and other industrial sites could have a lasting effect on communities, with tainted water possibly washing into homes and drinking supplies.

"Florence is moving toward the west near 13 miles per hour". In Hurricane Sandy in 2012, storm surge-induced flooding measured as high as 9 feet above ground in parts of NY and New Jersey, leading to billions of dollars in damages. However, the surge is expected to be accompanied by large and destructive waves, regardless of when the storm arrives. Tropical Storm Olivia made a double landfall in Hawaii Wednesday morning, first in west Maui then Lanai, KHNL reports. "The rainfall has been and continues to be a very substantial threat over the entire area".

"No hurricane landfall forecast is simple".

"Weakening is forecast to begin by the middle of the week as Isaac approaches the Lesser Antilles", the NHC said, urging residents in the Windward Islands - Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines - to pay particular attention to the storm. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands face possible isolated amounts of 3 inches.

Another disturbance is swirling around in the Gulf of Mexico.
