Trump on Hurricane Maria

Trump on Hurricane Maria

The water was believed to be part of relief efforts after Hurricane Maria wrought devastation on the USA territory last September.

Puerto Rico has been a USA territory since 1898. Infrastructure failures and political confusion appear to have contributed to deaths even months after the storm hit, as GW's study found a lasting spike in mortality rates, especially in poor areas that proved harder to reach in the aftermath of the storm. On Oct. 29, he died of a heart attack.

When he visited Puerto Rico a few days after the storm, Trump declared that, because of the low initial death toll - which included only deaths caused directly by the storm - Maria wasn't a "real catastrophe" like Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,833 people.

"If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them on to the list", he tweeted.

As Business Insider noted, Trump has been angry that what he saw as a generous gesture is being portrayed as insensitive to the destruction that the hurricane brought to Puerto Rico. The number was later raised to 64, but the government then commissioned an independent study to determine how many died because of post-storm conditions. A separate study conducted by Harvard University researchers produced an estimate of more than 4,000, though there was a significant variation on the actual death total.

The deaths fell in two categories: direct and indirect. This method was never done with previous hurricanes because other jurisdictions know how many people were killed. We are committed to the health of the population. "The truth is there is a lot of work to do", he said. "Ron DeSantis is committed to standing with the Puerto Rican community, especially after a tragic loss of life". In addition to this, the administrator of Puerto Rico's General Services Administration, Ottmar Chávez, in a statement said that Puerto Rico authorities had been given the approval to taking into custody the distribution of the 700 pallets of water among the local residents.

"I agree I've made mistakes", Rosselló said.

On Thursday, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz tweeted, "This is what denial following neglect looks like: Mr Pres in the real world people died on your watch".

Puerto Rico now says 2,975 people died on the island because of the storm.

The White House defended the president on Thursday.

As of time of writing, five deaths in North Carolina are being attributed to Hurricane Florence.

Trump's visit to Puerto Rico in October 2017 was defined by the moment he threw paper towels into a crowd of people as aid agencies and journalists warned of a major humanitarian crisis spanning the island of 3.3 million people.

Adam Goodman, a Republican consultant who supported Trump before the election and early in his presidency but has now become a critic, said the comments are certain to anger voters already inclined to vote Democratic in November.
