Cubs’ Addison Russell placed on administrative leave following abuse allegations

Cubs’ Addison Russell placed on administrative leave following abuse allegations

"Of course I forgave him and assumed it would never happen again".

MLB "takes allegations of Domestic Violence seriously", the league said in a statement Friday. There will be a renewed investigation, undoubtedly, and I think even if Melisa chooses not to be involved - which is her right - there will probably be punishment forthcoming.

That was the some response that Russell had to the initial accusations in June 2017, after which he vehemently denied allegations of physical abuse.

The Cubs said it supported the decision and would cooperate so any "appropriate action" can be taken.

Abuse allegations first surfaced in June 2017, when a person who had been identified as a close friend of Reidy-Russell accused Russell, via social media, of "mentally and physically abusing her".

-"When it began to set in for him that I was really serious about not wanting this marriage anymore, he just about lost his mind". The league said Reidy had declined to cooperate with investigators previous year, but new efforts would be made.

Major League Baseball first opened an investigation last June, when a friend of Russell's ex-wife alleged he physically abused Melisa.

- "I saw a darkness in him I've never seen or experienced in him or anyone else". It came in waves of honest apologies, to lashing out when I would stand my ground and not fall for his empty promises about changing & being a better husband and father.

As of Friday morning, Russell's representatives, the Cubs, or Major League Baseball have yet released a statement on the new report.

"The way I was treated and the way he made me feel about myself, tore me down to nothing. I knew he was the one, every bone in my body knew he was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with".

"Feeling as bad about myself as I already did, on top of finding out about him cheating on me again, put me into a rage to finally just leave, enough is enough, I couldn't [bear] to sit in our "home" any longer and fall deeper and deeper into depression", the post continued.

In a detailed post published Wednesday, Reidy-Russell detailed how her relationship with her unnamed former spouse stripped away her "self-worth & self-respect" and left her depressed. A friend of Reidy's added in a comment that Russell had physically abused her.

The couple's divorce was finalized August 30.

The 24-year-old Russell is hitting.250 with five homers and 38 RBIs in 130 games this season.
