Here is your first look at Joaquin Phoenix in full Joker make-up

The Joker is getting a new, gritty backstory starring Joaquin Phoenix. Pictures' Joker, starring Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, alongside Oscar victor Robert De Niro, and directed, produced and co-written by Oscar nominee Todd Phillips.

Production is now underway on Todd Phillips'Joker origin film starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.

Revealed on director Todd Phillips' Instagram, the "Camera test (w/ sound)" video shows off images of a joker with make up on superimposed onto the face of a barefaced Phoenix - but it ends with a few seconds of showing the full shot in makeup.

The makeup looks to have a very red, white and blue color scheme.

Phillips (The Hangover trilogy) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver (The Fighter), based on characters from DC. It's a surprisingly more traditional take on the character's facepaint, one that moves away from the smeared and distressed look of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight version and Jared Leto's punk rock take in Suicide Squad.

The video is set to The Guess Who's song Laughing, a sad tale about a broken relationship.

Earlier this week, Phillips revealed the first photo of Phoenix as "Arthur Fleck" before he becomes the famed Batman supervillain.
