Marvel Studios’ ‘The Eternals’ Movie Gets a Director

Marvel Studios’ ‘The Eternals’ Movie Gets a Director

After earning critical acclaim for her Sundance darling "The Rider", director Chloe Zhao looks ready to step up to the big leagues as the up and coming director has been set to direct "The Eternals" for Marvel. Zhao is the second female to helm a Marvel movie after Anna Boden who is co-directing Captain Marvel with Ryan Fleck.

Best known for directing The Rider and Songs My Brother Taught Me, Chloe Zhao was previously in the running to direct the Black Widow movie. We've already met some Celestials in the MCU, but The Eternals has the hard task of introducing a race of genetically-enhanced, basically immortal aliens - possessing all sorts of powers from superhuman strength, flight, teleportation, shooting blasts of heat and energy from their hands, and mind control - and making them compelling characters. The feature premiered in the Directors Fortnight and went on to play Telluride and TIFF a year ago.

Also birthed out of the experiments were the Eternals' enemies, the genetically unstable Deviants, who stood among the Elder Races of the cosmic Marvel universe - a humanoid race that predates humanity and once ruled the Earth.

Marvel Studios has hired a director for Eternals, a cosmic odyssey based on the characters introduced in 1974 by legendary creator Jack Kirby.

But in Zhao's hands, it could work. However, the script will reportedly focus on the love story between the cosmically powered Ikaris and Sersi, an Eternal who lives among humans. And Zhao is more than just an untested filmmaker who Marvel plucked from obscurity.
