Tiger Woods sends fans into meltdown with astonishing eagle

World number one Justin Rose has the advantage in the race for the FedEx Cup title after ending the first round of the Tour Championship one shot off leaders Rickie Fowler and Tiger Woods.

"I hit five wood into the green and I knew it was good so I started walking after it".

Follow Tiger and the entire field below with our live Tour Championship leaderboard, featuring updated scores and tee times throughout the tournament. With that being said, Woods has already proven that he can hang on the weekend this year.

Fans could not believe what they'd just witnessed.

Justin Rose, in his debut at No. 1 in the world, and Gary Woodland were at 66.

He then turned it up on the back nine, with birdies at the 12th and 14th holes setting the stage for his final-hole eagle.

"I didn't really mis-hit a single shot and I felt I had a lot of control".

As so often in his great years, Woods put in a grandstand finish at the par five 18th, sliding home a 28ft eagle putt to send the crowd into rapture.

Since returning officially to the US Tour in January after having spinal fusion surgery a year ago, Woods' 17 events have yielded two runner-up finishes among six top 10s and 11 top 25s.

Woods has done everything bar win during the 17 events to date in his extraordinary comeback that has seen him rise from outside the top 1,000 in the world to 21st.

Woods is still in the mix despite Xander Schauffele (64) surging into the outright lead at 13 under at the elite 70-man event - the penultimate leg of the $US67 million ($A93 million) FedEx Cup playoffs.
