Japanese Billionaire to Take First Private Flight to Space

The 42-year-old Maezawa has a current net worth of $2.9 billion, and is an avid art collector who last year paid $110.5 million for a 1982 painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The mission will not actually land on the moon, the BBC reported.

The SpaceX Starlink constellation is a satellite system that the company hopes will consist of over 3,500 spacecraft by 2024.

Musk said the BFR is still in development and will make several unmanned test launches before it takes on passengers.

Maezawa didn't say who will be on his guest list for the spaceflight, but he said he'd consider inviting Musk.

It was announced this Monday at the SpaceX headquarters in Los Angeles that Yusaka Maezawa will be the first tourist to be sent to the moon by Elon Musk's company.

During the conference in Hawthorne, Musk refused to divulge the amount Maezawa paid for the mission although he said that the Japanese billionaire would be "paying a very significant amount of money".

While Maezawa hasn't chosen which artists he will be taking on SpaceX he said that he is on the lookout for some of the world's greatest talents including musiscians, fashion designers, painters and film directors. But I did not want to have such a fantastic experience by myself.

That's a little out of reach for most people unless you're one of the lucky artists with an invite from Maezawa. He plans to offer the remaining seats to six to eight of his favorite artists for free (please tell me at least one of these artists is going to be Azealia Banks). Though Maezawa would receive proper training before the trip, he would be the normal human being to do that.

"Ever since I was a kid, I have loved the moon", he said. At the moment, the Big Falcon Rocket is not built, so getting it into flight condition within just a few short years will be a challenge.

Maezawa purchased every single flight on the BFR ship. Maezawa will be the first passenger to travel to the moon since the end of the Apollo missions in the United States in 1972.

Former drummer in a punk band and founder of online textile distributor Zozo, the billionaire will take a trip around the moon. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has already put a $5 million deposit down to save his spot on the first of these trips.
