Texas Senate debate between Ted Cruz and Beto O'Rourke

Texas Senate debate between Ted Cruz and Beto O'Rourke

Ted Cruz and Rep. Beto O'Rourke meet in the first debate of a contentious and surprisingly competitive Texas campaign.

"But pretty much all of them show Ted Cruz still leading", he said, adding that Latino voters, who tend not to show up in big numbers in midterm elections, are crucial for O'Rourke to have a chance.

Recent polls show that the race between Cruz and O'Rourke is relatively close for Texas, which has not sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1992.

The Reuters/Ipsos/UVA Center for Politics Poll released on Wednesday revealed that 47 percent of voters said they were in support of O'Rourke, while 45 percent said they favored Cruz.

However national Republicans have become increasingly skittish about the race.

The debate, the first of three scheduled between the two candidates, will be held Friday evening at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and will focus on domestic policy.

The candidates will also debate on September 30 at the University of Houston and on October 16 in San Antonio.

Cruz used PETA's demonstration as an opportunity to smear Democratic opponent Beto O'Rourke.

"You see a lot more O'Rourke signs in affluent Republican-leaning areas than you might typically see for a Democratic candidate".

A truck sporting a billboard plastered with a negative tweet from Trump about Cruz during the presidential campaign was parked outside the debate hall hours before the two men were set to face off.
