Djokovic hits Federer, pair lose in doubles at Laver Cup

"It's not easy playing one of the best players of all time, but what an wonderful atmosphere".

"It's just fantastic, for so many reasons".

The final singles battle saw David Goffin (Team Europe) edge out Diego Schwartzman (Team World) 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 in a thriller.

Chicago - Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock spoiled the doubles debut of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but Team Europe still led Team World 3-1 after the first day of the 2018 Laver Cup.

Sock and Anderson found their rhythm in the second set, blasting five of their eight aces to level the contest, before the pair took advantage of a Federer double fault at 4-4 in the 10-point match tiebreaker and held on for a critical triumph. This was Anderson's first singles win over Djokovic in a decade. Under the format being used for the tournament, a tiebreak is used instead of a decisive third set.

Anderson closed it out when the Serb fired a forehand into the net and the South African was mobbed by his teammates.

Bjorn Borg's favored Team Europe are trying to defend their crown against Team World which is captained by the legendary John McEnroe. "It was absolutely awesome".

World number two Federer was barely ruffled as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nick Kyrgios at Chicago's United Center.

It took just three games for Federer to break the Australian in the opening set, but he waited for a shorter period in the second, breaking him at love in his first service game with a masterful combination of play that sent the capacity crowd to rapture.

Earlier in the day, Federer and German Alexander Zverev sparked Europe by winning their singles matches, the Swiss rolling past Kyrgios 6-3 6-2.

Saturday's matches were worth two points each, but three points per match are up for grabs on the final day, with the first team to 13 points lifting the trophy.

Zverev then raced into the lead in the 10-point match tie-break before closing out for the win, rallying to beat new dad Isner.
