Ronaldo, Messi lacked respect with FIFA Best awards snub - Capello

Ronaldo, Messi lacked respect with FIFA Best awards snub - Capello

Best Women's Player appropriately went to Brazil's Marta, who is probably the sport's greatest current proponent, whilst Best Men's Coach went to French national team coach Didier Deschamps, and Reynald Pedros won the Best Women's Coach award for Olympique Lyonnais.

Portugal global Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the close season, was second in this year's awards with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in third place.

The Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder starred for both club and country as Madrid won a third straight Champions League, and he inspired Croatia to reach the World Cup final for the first time.

Marta has been named the Best FIFA Women's Player ahead of Lyon duo Ada Hegerberg and Dzsenifer Marozsan.

Neither Ronaldo or Messi attended the glitzy ceremony in London with both in action for Juventus and Barcelona respectively on Wednesday.

Is Modric the correct victor?

"It's a great honour and handsome feeling to stand here with this trophy", Modric said upon collecting the award for the first time.

"I would like to give congratulations to Mohamed and Cristiano for the great season that they had". The former Real Madrid "Galactico" clinched his third Champions League title in a row and fifth overall last season.

Modric is arguably in pole position for the main award after winning the Golden Ball at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation where Croatia finished runners-up. "I have to thank everyone who voted for me". They are the best.

"I would like to mention my footballing idol and captain of Croatia in 1998 [Zvonimir Boban], in the first participation and a bronze in France". He was my big inspiration and that team gave us belief that we could achieve something great in Russian Federation, and hopefully we can be the same for next generations.

The 33-man panel will be voting for the best young player aged under 21. "All dreams can come true".

Federation Internationale de Football Association will crown the best players, coaches and goal from the previous year when it hosts The Best awards ceremony and gala in London on Monday, September 24.
