Effectiveness of the flu shot

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, 59 percent of children under the age of 18 and 43 percent of adults reported receiving the flu vaccine in 2016-17. The Health Department will again offer the high-dose influenza vaccine this year. While not 100 percent effective, flu vaccines still provide a baseline level of protection, Martell said. She says the flu vaccine is formulated each year to keep up with flu viruses as they change.

Some others say they don't bother with the flu shot because it's not effective. A little fewer than 700 visited Stroger with flu-like illness last season, more than three times the number who went there the year before. "Children in this age group who are getting vaccinated for the first time will need two doses of flu vaccine, spaced at least four weeks apart". He said influenza can be a serious illness, and even mild cases can lead to lost time at work or with friends and family. "Flu is not just a cold".

Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.

"Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but it's certainly recommended to get it each year", Adkins said.

That's why local health care providers say they want to make sure expectant mothers understand that the flu shot is safe at any stage of pregnancy and while they are breastfeeding.

In the Bluegrass State, the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky also has announced a statewide flu prevention campaign, aimed at preventing an epidemic-level flu season like previous year, when more than 10,000 people were infected.

"As a caution, calculating vaccine effectiveness based on aggregate, non-matched methods from large datasets likely will produce distorted results and should be avoided", the researcher authors said. "More than any on record, and 80 percent of them were not vaccinated".

It is also important to mention that the flu vaccine can not cause flu illness. Delivery of supplies of certain flu vaccines to GP practices and community pharmacies will be staggered between September and November.

At least 900,000 people were hospitalized a year ago for the flu.

"2,680 patients with flu in confirmed flu in hospitals " Dr Richard Roberts, Head of the Vaccine Preventable Disease Programme at Public Health Wales, said: "Each year new flu viruses circulate, causing many people to be ill and some to face life-threatening complications".

The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) is offering flu immunizations at its walk-in clinic, 425 First Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

The 2017-2018 flu season also saw an increase in flu related deaths in children. Insurance billing will be provided for Medicare Part B and Medicaid eligible clients and also for most health insurance companies.
